What is chimney inspection?
Chimney inspection is a structured evaluation used to identify the system type, reproduce the complaint when safe, check related components, and separate the visible symptom from the actual cause.
Why this service may be needed
Choose chimney inspection when the cause is uncertain, the fireplace has changed behavior, a property is being purchased or renovated, or you need a documented starting point before approving repair work.
What the service includes
- Review the fireplace, chimney, vent route, termination, and accessible exterior conditions
- Look for blockage, water entry, corrosion, movement, cracks, failed seals, or heat damage
- Document the condition and explain repair priorities
- Use materials and methods suited to the chimney or listed vent system
- Recheck affected areas after the work is complete
Natural gas compared with propane
The chimney or vent must be evaluated for the appliance and fuel actually connected to it. Wood, natural gas, propane, and listed direct-vent appliances create different temperatures, moisture, draft conditions, and venting requirements.
Log set or built-in fireplace?
The service approach changes between an open firebox with an added gas log set, a factory-built direct-vent fireplace, a gas insert, a zero-clearance system, an outdoor fire feature, and an electric fireplace. The model and listing determine which components, clearances, venting, and procedures apply.
